Is it unusual to wear ear plugs at family gatherings?

I am obligated to be present but I don’t have to listen to the crap spewing out of their mouths. I also hum quietly because the ear plugs don’t block everything out.

Good etiquette here, would be to please everyone and stay away – but perhaps you are too unreliable to be left by yourself? If you wear the unusual ear plugs, you will get all the attention you want – no need to hum – it would be redundant and your falsetto voice is peculiar.
